Many of the men of the Indian tribes were killed in the battles with other adversaries and in the process of providing food by hunting. This meant there were more women that men. In many of the Indian Tribes, if a man died in the hunt or war, his brother would marry the widow and take the children (Schoolhistory.com)

The South Eastern Culture of the American Indian, compromised of the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Muskhogee tribes were mostly hunters/farmers and were communal and practiced polygamy.

Although, the Pueblo tribes of the west were communal they did not practice polygamy like the South Eastern tribes.

Tribes of the Northwest were hunters, gatherers and fishers and for the most part were monogamous. It might be of note here that mountain  men sometimes took a native wife and in some cases more then more.

The Plains Culture was comprised of nomadic hunter/gatherer tribes. The plains tribe consisted mostly of Comanche, Kiowa, Sioux, Dakota, Lakota, Crow, Blackfeet, Arapaho, Cheyenne plus some other minor tribes. Asa with the Southeastern Indian nations the plains Indian were communal and practiced Polygamy (Four Directions chapter 3).

When it to Polygamy, a wealthy Native American could have as many wives as he wanted as long as he could provide for them all. The men did the provisioning and the wives did the sewing, cooking, building, and taking care of the living quarters. Having more wives, meant that the work could be shared and everyone could be looked after properly.
